Lot Essay

Roche was born in Glasgow and entered the Glasgow School of Art alongside Lavery with whom he went to Paris in 1881. Both studied at the Academie Julien under Lefebvre and Boulanger, and Roche's subsequent work reveals the influence of Bastien Lepage and the French Romantic tradition. He returned to Glasgow to become one of the city's most successful turn-of-the-century artists.
