“The artist’s remarkable gift for realizing the pictorial potential of ordinary utensils can also be linked to the idiosyncratic notion of gambiarra, a Brazilian term that literally means ‘improvisation but more generally embodies the prevalent attitude of making do with little in a country where many still live close to the poverty line.
