Lot Essay

Alexandre René Veron was a pupil of Paul Delaroche. He made his Salon debut in 1848, and exhibited only landscapes at the Salon over a period of three decades. Among these he depicted figures relaxing on river banks. In the present lot he has captured the exhilaration of a boat race, which dominates the foreground of his landscape.
