Lot Essay

The Arbeitsgruppe Alfons Walde (Gert Ammann, Peter Konzert, Carl Kraus, Michael Walde-Berger) has confirmed the authenticity of this work, which will be included in the forthcoming Alfons Walde Werkverzeichnis.

In Sonntag in Tirol, Alfons Walde has gathered a group of his typical local Tyrolean farmers in their Sunday best – the typical felt vest, hat, white shirt and blue and pink apron. The artist depicts a lively scene, with the three good humoured farmers having just been interrupted in their chatting, as the farmer’s wife walking past throws a casual, even flirtatious greeting their way. Their reaction is reciprocal, indicated by their open mouths. This is a happy scene with Walde’s signature strong colours and bright reflections in the snow. It is no accident that Walde placed the female figure in front of a warm background, while the three male figures dominate the cooler tone of the snow on the ground. The composition is again positioned at a low angle, which makes the proud farmers in their confident poses even more monumental in appearance.
