Lot Essay

The Arbeitsgruppe Alfons Walde (Gert Ammann, Peter Konzert, Carl Kraus, Michael Walde-Berger) has confirmed the authenticity of this work, which will be included in the forthcoming Alfons Walde Werkverzeichnis.

Tiroler Bäuerin is one of Alfons Walde’s most popular motifs. In the present work, the artist has given her the entire picture plane in this large format work. In her traditional costume he has placed the farmer’s wife at a dramatic angle and with a striking silhouette. Walde catches her in a spontaneous and lively moment, the hat band flowing energetically behind her, giving the composition a great dynamic. With her animated gay smile she corresponds with someone outside the picture plane, or indeed us, the viewers. The artist has kept the colour spectrum in white, ochre and brown, displaying his closeness to fellow Austrian artist Albin Egger-Lienz.
