Alfred Stannard's painting of the Yarmouth coast includes a view of Yarmouth jetty with Nelson's Column visible in the distance. Stannard has foreshortened the view to show the Column on the South Denes. It was erected in 1819, as a monument to Norfolk born Admiral Lord Nelson, and pre-dates the column in Trafalgar Square by twenty-four years.
The Yarmouth coast was frequently depicted by the artists of the Norwich School and Stannard's son, Alfred George Stannard is known to have painted almost exactly the same subject.
