Lot Essay

The present work is a complex composition incorporating four boats in a harbour but with each boat on a different scale, suggesting that Wallis started with one boat and then decided to fit the others around it. The most detailed of the boats is depicted up on the harbour wall with the winches ready to lower the boat back into the water.
