Lot Essay

Religion played a large part in the tightly-knit community of St Ives; the tradition of not going to sea on Sundays was rigorously observed. Wallis joined the Salvation Army in 1904 and in his daily life observed strong religious and moral beliefs. The present work was executed on the reverse of a Salvation Army Christmas card.
