Lot Essay

The 1931 Derby was won by Mr J. A. Dewar's Cameronian, a small bay colt. Cameronian, ridden by F. Fox, started a firm favourite for the Derby at 7-2, having already won the Two Thousand Guineas by two lengths with the starting price of 100-8. Sir J. Rutherford's Orpen, the second favourite, came in a close second but both horses were challenged in the home straight by Sandwich, ridden by H. Wragg, who swept past Goyescas and Gallini, and was bearing down on the two leaders at the winning post. Wragg considered himself an unlucky loser, as he failed to get a clear run until it was too late. The bookmakers were unanimous in describing the result as terrible.
