John Prideaux Basset was the posthumous son of John Pendarves Basset (1713-1739) of Tehidy Park, Cornwall, and his wife Anne, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Edmund Prideaux, 5th Bt., of Netherton. He died in 1756 aged only sixteen and was buried at Illogan.
Tehidy Park, which was built for the Basset family in 1734, to the designs of Thomas Edwards of Greenwich, and which was later rebuilt, was destroyed by fire shortly after the end of the First World War.
