ALLEN GINSBERG
THE COLLECTION OF JERRY ARONSON Before I ever met Allen Ginsberg in the flesh, he actually saved my life. As a student photographing the 1968 riots at the Chicago Democratic Convention, I was only moments from the wrong end of a policeman's club when Allen's gentle "Ohm" helped calm the rebellious and angry crowd. I spent 25 years with Allen and his Beat contemporaries and with the countless artists he inspired, creating a gift of gratitude for his humanity and generosity, my film The Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg. Allen was not only a poet but a compulsive shutterbug as well. The band of free spirits that surrounded him are brought to life in these fresh, spontaneous photographs. Allen Ginsberg changed the course of my life and the course of my generation, and he did it with an irreverent, joyful eye that lit up the world around him; you can feel that spirit bursting through his images like sparks from the great Beat bonfire that lit up our lives.
