This gouache of over 1.40 m represents the town of Jirkov (Görkau), south-east of Dresden in today’s Czech Republic. The view was probably made from the main hall of the Baroque Castle known as the Cervený Hrádek (Rothenhaus), as evident from an old inscription on the stretcher’s verso. The architect and landscapist Alois Schulz made the drawing in 1849, when the castle was property of the count von Bucquoy, a loyal patron of Schulz, who also commissioned the artist a theatre design for one of his other castles.
