With its serpentined and tassel-enriched crest-rail, serpentined feet with eagle-claw emerging from acanthus foliage and its rail embellished with a 'Venus' shell, the chairs relate closely to a ribbon-back parlour chair in the Yale University Art Gallery, Connecticut, illustrated by J. Kirk, American Furniture and the British Tradition New York, 1982, no. 1008 and attributed to the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area circa 1750-90
