Lot Essay

Gorham's Martelé archives as reproduced by Larry Pristo in Martelé Gorham's Nouveau Art Silver, 2002, p. 198, notes that vase 2292 was completed on 5 October, 1899 and had a net factory price of $116. The vase was raised in 32 hours and then chased for an additional 53 hours by Frederick Joseph Buxton Jr.

The form and chased decoration on this vase relates closely to a pair of vases sold in these rooms 24 January 2020, lot 386. These vases, coded 1481, were completed on 24 April, 1899, just six months earlier than the present lot, and were shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900.
