AN ANTWERP HISTORICAL TAPESTRY
Late 17th Century
Woven in wools and silks, depicting a riding lesson within a garden landscape with a tree and a fountain to the left background, within a formal garden with a figure walking, and an architectural facade to the background with further woodland to the right-hand side, within a scrolled foliate and floral border contained in reciprocal red slips, the top and lower borders centred by C-scrolled and strapwork-filled cartouches, within later outer slips, the main field probably reduced in height to the top and in width to the right side, areas of reweaving and patching
9 ft. 7 in. x 11 ft. (290 cm. x 333 cm.)

Lot Essay

A tapestry, possibly from the same series, depicting a rider flanked by a blackamoor holding a horse within a wooded landscape, from the property of the duchesse de Montmorency, was sold in these Rooms, 24 October 1957, lot 141.
