AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED AMPHORA (TYPE B)
attributed to the swing painter
circa 520 b.c.
The panel on the obverse with Dionysos in the center wearing a striped himation, seated on a stool, a wreath in his hair, holding a rhyton in his left hand and an ivy branch in his right, the god surrounded by four dancing satyrs, each with red hair and beard, all wearing a white garland around their necks but for the satyr to the left who wears his over his right shoulder; the reverse with a departure scene with two warriors walking to the left, each wearing a crested Corinthian helmet and greaves, and carrying a shield and a spear, the warrior to the left with a bird in white as the shield blazon, the warrior to the right with a compass-drawn rosette on his, with a bearded man to the right wearing a himation and holding a staff, and a youth to the left wearing a mantle; with rays above the foot, a lotus bud and palmette chain above each scene; details in added red and white
