AN ATTIC RED-FIGURED COLUMN-KRATER
attributed to the harrow painter, circa 480-470 b.c.
The obverse with a youthful acontist testing the correct placement of the wound-up thong on his javelin, the youth walking to the right, his torso twisting to the right, his head turned back, the javelin held up diagonally in his right hand, the details of his musculature rendered in dilute glaze, so too his carefully detailed lashes, pupil and iris, and the fringe of hair at his forehead; the reverse with a youth moving to the right, looking back at the rhyton which he holds in his right hand, his left extended before him, wrapped in a chlamys; but for rays above the foot, the only other ornament is a band of dotted lotus bud chain on the neck of the obverse; graffito on the underside of the foot
