AN ATTIC RED-FIGURED COLUMN-KRATER
Attributed to the Naples Painter
Circa 400 B.C.
The obverse with the "Introduction of Herakles to Olympus," the hero standing to the right and extending his right hand to Zeus seated majestically before him, the hero's patron Athena standing between them raising two fingers, and a goddess standing to the left offering a fillet, with two columns on the right side which mark the entrance to Olympus, the hero with his lionskin tied around his neck and draped over his left shoulder, the lion's open jaws angled up, his club in his lowered left hand, a baldric diagonally across his chest, Athena wearing a peplos and her snakey aegis, a band in her hair, holding a spear in her right hand, the spear-head down, Zeus in a chiton with patterned shoulders, a mantle draped around his legs, a thunderbolt and scepter in his left hand, his klismos on a raised platform; the reverse with three draped youths, the figure to the left with a walking stick, a strigil hanging to his right; the scenes framed by double bands of dots on either side and a band of tongue above, the obverse with lotus bud chain on the neck, with a double band of dots on the rim, palmettes above the handle-plates, lotus bud chain on the upper surface of the rim, and tongues around the handle roots
