Inspired by French orientalist and polychrome sculpture in marble and precious metals, Goldscheider brought this elite style to a wider market by producing colourful hand-finished glazed terracotta editions. Employing prominent sculptors to portray both historical and contempora ry genre figures, the firm won critical and commercial acclaim, exhibited at the international exhibitions, including Paris in 1889 and 1900, and opened retail outlets in Paris, Berlin and Florence. Other manu facturers sought to emulate Goldscheider's success but the firm's output can still be distinguished from that of lesser competitors by its sculptural quality. Sensitively modelled with grace and good humour, life-size terracotta figures of African American children in contemporary dress, such as lots 166 and 167, are among the most prized examples of Goldscheider's art.
