The mirror, surmounted by an antique urn, is designed in the George II 'picturesque' manner with rusticated pilasters framed by fruiting shrubs, and relates to patterns for carvers work issued by Thomas Johnson, author of Twelve Girandoles, 1755 and One Hundred and Fifty New Designs, 1761.
The mirror formed part of the furnishings of Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, which has been celebrated for its Chippendale furnishings . The Yorkshire-born cabinet-maker Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) was first employed at the house by Sir Rowland Winn, 4th Baronet (d. 1765), but this frame may have been one of the items of furniture introduced to the house in the l9th Century. It bears the label of the Wakefield carvers and gilders Messrs Abraham and Sons.
