In the French taste, the shaped rectangular padded seat upholstered in celadon green silk over a shaped seatrail carved at each side with a scallop shell flanked by acanthus on a diapered ground, the hipped cabriole legs headed by shells, foliage and bellflowers and with acanthus scrolled toes 18in. (46cm.) high, 27in. (69cm.) wide, 20½in. (52cm.) deep

This stool relates closely to a pair of armchairs sold Sotheby's New York, 22 April 1995, lot 82. Another similar pair of stools from the collection of Walter Chrysler, Jr. was sold Parke-Bernet Galleries, 6-7 May 1960, lot 500.
