AN EARLY VICTORIAN ORMOLU-MOUNTED SATINWOOD DAVENPORT by Gillows of Lancaster, the pierced three-quarter galleried rectangular top above a green leather-lined hinged writing-slope enclosing a fitted satinwood interior with two mahogany-lined drawers and two false drawers, the top with burgundy cotton trellis, the sides each incorporating a panelled slide and one with hinged, fitted pen drawer with two associated wells and pen-tray and a lidded compartment, on reeded and gadrooned end-supports with twin-fluted columns joined by a padded green velvet-covered stretcher, on cabriole legs and acanthus cabochon-carved pad feet with castors, the later lock stamped SECURE LEVER, one drawer with pencil inscription Tho.. Thomas Myers is recorded in the Gillow records from 1897-1840. Two dressing-tables made by Gillos for Parlington Hall, Yorks., had similar signatures to this davenport (see: C.Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, Leeds, 1978, vol.II, p.380, no.500)
