Circular and with hinged cover, cast and chased with the Royal Arms, with an oak-leaf and acorn border, the inside with wax seal of Queen Victoria, with the legend 'Victoria Dei Gratia Britanniarum Regina Fidei Defensor' on one side, marked on side and flange of lid, the base engraved 'R&S GARRARD & CO. HAYMARKET, LONDON'

Because of the importance of the seal it became customary to enclose those attached to important documents in a box. These boxes were usually made of silver or, as with the examples here, silver-gilt.
