AN EDWARDIAN SILVER COPY OF THE PHOENIX ASSURANCE MACE FINIAL (LOT 445)
MARK OF D. & J. WELLBY, LONDON, 1903
Modelled as the phoenix mace finial, the base engraved with an inscription, supported on an ebonised wood plinth with an applied band of flowers and a band of flame motifs, further applied with a plaque with a presentation inscription, fully marked
24½ in. (62 cm.) total height
The inscription on the base reads: 'This Piece of Plate is an Exact Copy of the Mace in use at The Head Office since the formation of the Company'
The inscription on the plaque reads: 'Phoenix Assurance Company Limited Founded 1782 Established in Canada 1804 Presented be the Phoenix Fire Office London to the Canadian Branch on the occasion of it's centenary in Canada and it's recognition of the valued services of Messr's Paterson & Sons, Chief Agents August 1904'
