Chairs of this type called 'Gossip' chairs, formed part of the repertoire of designs made by three generations of the Wheeler family of furniture makers who worked in Arncroach, a small village in the East Neuk of Fife, in the late 19th and 20th centuries. For a more detailed review of these chairs and the Wheeler workshop see Lindsay Macbeth The Wheelers of Arncroach, Regional Furniture 1991, volume V
