Lot Essay

Such tile niches were used in conjunction with wash-basins, although only four complete tiled recesses exist. These were intended for guests to wash their hands prior to dining. See the example illustrated by Michael Archer in Delftware, the Tin-Glazed Earthenware of the British Isles, a Catalogue of the Collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1997, p. 426, no. N.7.
