Lot Essay

European hunting subjects appear surprisingly infrequently on English delft. Lipski and Archer record only a handful of dated punch-bowls, mugs and a plate with similar scenes. Only one other dated mug from the collection at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, dated 1728 and painted with satirical figures pursuing a fox (Louis L. Lipski and Michael Archer, ibid., p. 182, no. 817) is recorded. Given the national obsession with hunting with hounds and the delftware potters enthusiasm for producing dated and presentation wares the present mug would appear to be a rare survivor.
