Of conventional form, the globular body inscribed Here Gentlemen come try. your:Skill,/I'le hold a wager if you will:/That you don't drink this liquor all;/Without you spill or lett some fall. above the date 1732, between husks and scrolls within an elongated lobed cartouche flanked by flowers, between concentric lines, the neck pierced with flowerheads edged in blue, the spouted rim with leaf border, the handle with dot, dash and chain-ornament (some scattered glaze flaking)

See Louis L. Lipski and Michael Archer, Dated English Delftware, London, 1984, no. 1019 (unillustrated), sold Puttick and Simpson, 27 January 1944, lot 193 (perhaps the present example). See also no. 1022 for a very similar jug to the present example dated 1733. The only other example of this type dated 1732 currently known was sold in these Rooms 12 June 1995, lot 2.
