Lot Essay

Emanuel Drentwett was a member of a celebrated family of gold and silversmiths based in Augsburg which originated in the 16th century and continued until the mid 18th century. Emanuel, who became a master in 1713, is known to have produced at least one other similar ivory cup. This is listed by Seling (supplement, op. cit., p. 66) as having passed through the art market in 1984, and is described as a gilded and engraved ivory goblet depicting a 'Gathering of the Gods' with a figure of Bacchus as the finial. The finial on the present goblet, now lost, probably depicted Diana, and certainly would have been related to the hunting theme evident in the carved ivory frieze.
