Lot Essay

The present painting illustrates the second book in which the King of Koshala, Dasharatha, dies. After acquiescing to one of his wive’s demands to enthrone their son Bharata, that in turn forced Rama and Sita into exile in the forest for fourteen years, Dasharatha died of grief in the city's capital, Ayodhya.
