Lot Essay
This caster is one of three known early examples to have been made by Georg Jensen to a design by the prominent Danish architect and designer, Anton Rosen (1859-1928). Another caster of this model was sold at Christie's, New York, January 19, 2005, lot 27. This caster is based on Rosen's design for a heating stove of 1901. The tiger and sugar cane iconography on the cover refer to this caster's function.
The two men first collaborated in 1905 on a pair of stone-set silver spoons designed by Rosen. The spoons are now in the collection of the Danish Museum of Decorative Arts. Two of the known sugar casters belonged to Anton Rosen, and a note from his heir cites: "Silver caster. Personal gift from Georg Jensen to Anton Rosen in return for having the work and drawing exhibited as often as possible." The casters date to 1908 and in the year following Jensen won the commission to design silver for the Palace Hotel in Copenhagen, Rosen's most significant architectural project. This was a highly important commission for the young firm, with the silver service valued at 100,000 kroner.
