An Italian ebony veneered, ivory marquetry and carved wood frame, circa 1875
in the Renaissance style, inset to the centre with a polychrome and parcel-gilt oval plaster panel painted with a portrait bust of the angel Gabriel, within an inner ebony frame carved with ribbon bound fruit and beaded ornament and inset within a hardwood rectangular panel, boldly carved in high relief with grotesques, the outer frame inscribed and dated, inlaid in ivory with further grotesques and inset with ivory portrait relief medallions depicting named and unnamed Italian rulers, scientist, artists and philosphers, within an outer tongue and grooved moulded border, the cresting carved with a lion's head and paws flanking a cartouche inscribed ROMA, the terminal to the apron carved with a winged grotesque mask, the outer edge of the frame carved with scrolls and flowerheads -- 25½ x 20in. (64.8 x 50.8cm.) overall
