AN ITALIAN RENAISSANCE STYLE LIMED OAK DINING ROOM SUITE Late 19th century Comprising a set of twelve dining chairs, each with arched cresting with grape and vine decoration, caryatid mounts, padded back and seats on reeded turned legs, including two elbow chairs with large scrolled arms and caryatid legs; a large sideboard with break arch cresting centred by winged cherubs, profusely carved with grape and vine decoration, the upper section with three graduated tiers, flanked by canted caryatid supports, two carved frieze drawers and cupboards be low, on large paw feet, 178 cm (70 in.) wide; 68 cm (26 3/4 in.) deep; 250 cm (98 1/2 in.) high; an extension dining table, on corner caryatid formed legs, central pedestal with three extra leaves, 116 cm (45 1/2 in.) wide; 79 cm (31 in.) high; 292 cm (115 in.) fully extended See illustration (15)
Provenance
Each piece in this suite of dining room furniture is carved with the monogram 'GVL'. It was made for Sir George Victor Lansell (1883-1959), businessman, politician and philanthropist. The present vendor purchsed it from the Lansell Estate in 1959.
