JIN/EARLY YUAN DYNASTY, LATE 13TH CENTURY
Of Cizhou type, the slender tapering ovoid body incised through the dark brown glaze to the buff body before firing with four registers of calligraphy within linear borders below the small spreading mouth, the inside of the foot also glazed.

Lot Essay

Cizhou wares of this type were commonly used to hold wine, and the three registers of text incised in the 'cut-glaze' method on the present lot refer to specific songs and poems, the joys and efficacy of the 'golden cup', and perhaps most amusingly, a Confucian summation of the correct relationships, concluding 'when the son is filial, the father can relax', presumably with a cup of wine.
