Nous remercions le Professeur Fernando Mazzocca et Madame Alessandra Zanchi d'avoir confirmé l'attribution sur la base de photographies et de nous avoir indiqué que le modèle pourrait être Joséphine Bonaparte. Ce portrait peut être rapproché d'un autre portrait de Joséphine Bonaparte peint par Andrea Appiani en 1796. Il s'agit probablement de l'un des portraits de Joséphine que Giuseppe Beretta mentionne dans sa biographie consacrée à l'artiste en 1848 (G. Beretta, Le opere di Andrea Appiani commentario, 1848).
