Lot Essay

This sheet relates closely to another by Boscoli in the Uffizi (inv. 2251 S; Il seicento Fiorentino, exh. cat., Florence, Palazzo Strozzi, 1986, p. 95, no. 2.35) of which it is probably an autograph replica. The composition has a pendant in Weimar, Bacchanal with Silenus (inv. KR 1565) which is similarly inscribed like the present lot 'Andrea Boscoli de Florence 1582'. Baldinucci mentioned these compositions in conjunction with a commission by Carlo Davanzati for an engraved silver bowl (F. Baldinucci, Notize dei professori del disegno, Florence, 1681-1728, ed. 1846, III, p. 74).
