Dandelions is the first of many of Goldsworthy's works that feature the magnificent oak tree from the woods of Capenoch near the artist's home in Dumfriesshire. The tree's exceptionally precocious horizontal branch which hovers close to the ground inspired the artist to write in his journal, "The long branch that has grown horizontal to the ground has taught me that the tree is the land. The branch is like the landscape. It is the earth, it is stone- these things flow through the tree as they do through the field and the mountains" (Goldsworthy, quoted in A. Goldsworthy, Wood, London 1996, p. 85). For the present work, executed in May of 1994, Goldsworthy first waited for the dandelions to blossom, then quickly collected them and placed them side by side along the length of the branch and then finally photographed the entire ensemble before the flowers wilted in the sun.
