Lot Essay

"I do feel so concerned about the things I paint, whether they are houses, or altars, or just objects in still life. When I paint cups on a table they are now something more than cups on a table - they are just like houses in a landscape - they have a kind of - well - a strength about them" (Anne Redpath, in an interview with the BBC at her home in Edinburgh, first shown on 31 January 1961, see P. Bourne Anne Redpath, Edinburgh, 1989, p. 92).
