Lot Essay

Although Bartsch suggests that the print after the present drawing was etched by Guido Reni, Veronika Birke considers there to be no convincing stylistic similarities with Guido's prints and further notes that the etching is listed as by Annibale in most collections (V. Birke (ed.), The Illustrated Bartsch, 40 (commentary, part 1), Italian Masters of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, New York, 1987, p. 355, no. 4005.043). An old copy, somewhat larger, of this composition is in Stockholm (P. Bjurström, C. Loisel and E. Pilliod, Italian Drawings, Florence, Siena, Modena, Bologna, Stockholm, 2002, no. 1425).
