Lot Essay

Ten of the fifty-four chapters of the eleventh-century Tale of Genji are illustrated on this pair of screens. On the right are Chapters 1 (Kiritsubo The Paulownia Court), 3 (Utsusemi The Shell of the Locust), 5 (Wakamurasaki Lavender), 7 (Momiji no ga An Autumn Excursion) and another scene. On the left are Chapters 4 (Yugao Evening Faces), 14 (Miozukushi Channel Buoys), 16 (Sekiya The Gatehouse), 23 (Hatsune The First Warbler) and 24 (Kocho Butterflies).
