Lot Essay

Can be compared to a group of drawings by Waterloo, similar in size, technique and style which are very close to drawings by Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) (H.-U. Beck, Künstler um Jan van Goyen, Maler und Zeicher, Doornspijk, 1991, pp. 436-41, nos. 1233-54). A number of these were used by Waterloo as designs for his etchings (Bartsch 8, 11,12, 14, 15 and 18).

The attribution to Waterloo was confirmed by Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck in the 1996 catalogue.
