Lot Essay

Devis travelled extensively in Britain, although his exact movements are difficult to trace as he rarely inscribed or dated his work. At the age of thirteen he was already working as a painter in London, and he went on to exhibit at both the Free Society of Artists and at the Royal Academy, before retiring to Surrey. The limited palette and bold looping lines of the present watercolour are characteristic of his distinctive draughtsmanship.
