4o (195 x 154 mm). AUTOGRAPH ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. Comprising 5 parts: Part I, 79 leaves and 5 blank leaves, Cyrillic manuscript in black ink, first leaf of text with an half page illustrations, sixth leaf recto with a multiplication table, text within yellow, green and black frames. Part II, 40 leaves and one blank leaf, Cyrillic manuscript in black ink, most pages with 2 geometrical designs, text and designs within yellow, green, red and black frames. Part III, 14 leaves and 2 blank leaves, Cyrillic manuscript in black ink, numerous geometrical designs, text and designs within yellow and black frame. Part IV, 20 leaves and one blank leaf, Cyrillic manuscript in black ink many architectural and geometrical designs, text and designs within a black double or triple line border. 19th-century russia and marbled boards (light wear to spine and corners). Provenance: Ivan Stepanov ("This arithmetic belongs to a soldier of Kasan Garrison Infantery regiment Sviiazhskii.")
A very finely written manuscript, with the illustrated geometrical design executed in the greatest detail. The first manuscript is "Arifmetika, praktika ili deiatelnaia." This title is identical to that used for the first substantial part of Leontii Filipovich Magnitskii's (1669-1739). Arifmetika; Sirech nauka chislitel'naia. [Arithmetic, called the computational science.] Throughout the manuscript Arabic numerals instead of the traditional Cyrillic alphabetic numbers are being used. The other parts concern geometry. Sviiazhskii, where Ivan Stepanov was stationed, is a small town near Kazan, where Lobachevskii was a rector at the University from 1827-1846 and developed his non-Euclidean geometry.
