There are no records of Elsley exhibiting this work. The model is the artist's only child Marjorie, aged eight or nine. She was Elsley's main model during the time he lived at 26 Queen's Road, St. John's Wood, London where Marjorie attended The Elms, a small private school in the next street, Finchley Road. Although all three dogs appear in other paintings by the artist, it is unusual for him to show three different breeds in the same picture.

The New Dress was reproduced as a sepia photogravure by C.W. Faulkner & Co., London. It was also reproduced as a colour chromolithograph print, probably for a calendar circa 1914.
