Lot Essay

Melville was one of the leading Glasgow Boys, whose work was recently reappraised in an exhibition at the Royal Academy, London. Although the present work is an early academic study, later Melville was to develop his style with a brilliant and individual impressionist approach that had many imitators, including Frank Brangwyn and Hercules Brabazon Brabazon.
