Lot Essay

The Virgin and Child in the present work derives from an original composition attributed to Sir Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp) known in several variants and copies (see M. Jaffé, Catalogo Completo Rubens, 1989, no.383). One such example with an attribution to Rubens was sold at Christie's New York on 11 January 1991, lot 73.
