Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Stella Rudolph for suggesting the attribution to Anton Domenico Gabbiani, on the basis of photographs (written communication, 7 August 2006). It has been suggested that the sitter of this portrait might be a youthful Violante di Bavaria (1673-1731), painted shortly after her marriage to Gran Principe Ferdinando de' Medici.
