Lot Essay

After a lost picture by Pieter Breughel the Elder formerly in the collection of C. van der Geest and Peter Stevens entitled The Heath, known through a copy in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich, illustrated in W. Adler, Landscapes and Hunting Scenes in Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, London, 1982, XVII, part I, fig. 70. The original is also seen in the upper left corner of Wilhelm van Hecht's The picture gallery of C. van der Geest.
