Lot Essay

The sitter, (and the sitter in the following lot), were the sons of Bertel Wichmand, a Danish merchant who acquired the Engestofte estate in southern Denmark in 1727. Both pictures remained in the house until it's sale in 1973. Jorgen Wichmand, the oldest son, was a successful judge who took over the estate in 1751. His younger brother, Thomas, was a naval officer.
