Lot Essay

The Maison Aucoc was founded in 1821 when Casimir Aucoc established a silversmithing business at 154, rue St. Honoré in Paris where he stayed until moving to 6, rue de la Paix.

By 1854, he had retired and his son Louis took over, adding luxury jewellery to their line of silverware. Based on the signature L. Aucoc aîné, the elder, we assume that he manufactured the present watch case and châtelaine, probably by special order from a client.
In the 1870's, Casimir's grandson, Louis Aucoc, born in 1850, assumed the leadership and it was under his direction that the talented René Lalique was apprenticed.
